Do you know Jean Baum?

Do you know Jean Baum? Come inside for an introduction.

Jean is our youngest author and joined the D3 team for a special project. When we decided to create a product focusing on super-heroic teenagers, we needed someone who understood the trials and tribulations of modern adolescent from their point of view. We recruited a teenager to write the backgrounds of these heroines (NPC or PC characters). She turned fifteen just prior to the release of Extras! Schoolgirl Sidekicks, super-powered by M&M.

Jean has not had as much time to write as she did last year. Currently, she is attending college and should have her Associate’s Degree before she turns 17. She is also learning to drive, and in her usual gung-ho fashion, she started with a manual transmission in a car that is almost as old as herself. Even though it is summer, she is taking four college classes and is looking for a part-time job.

Jean still finds time to game with friends and usually plays Pathfinder twice per week. She also GM’s regularly and participates in several local conventions, including Salt Lake Gaming Con, Salt Lake Comic Con, Fan X, and SaltCon. At these events, she draws the attention of other young gamers and has helped spread the hobby to the next generation.  If you ever want to boost the traffic to a booth at a convention of

Author Musings: Gods of the First Pantheon – FREE download

Empires of Glory Free RPG DayThe First Pantheon

When Pyren and Menea created the original races, they soon chose the paragons of those races to help them maintain creation. Although the pantheon has grown significantly from its beginnings, the earliest and most powerful of these gods and their realms of control are:

Zyterus – Dragon God of the Sky. Legend states that Zyterus was the first of the pantheon, representing the dragons with his wife Evetia. Zyterus is detailed in Rcane’s Guide to Fantastic Races: The Metallic Dragon Descended (available now).

Zelgadyn – Dragon God of Magic. The youngest of the dragon gods, Zelgadyn focused on his planar ties while his parents began fighting. Finally, after perfecting his studies, he ended the civil war through his superior arcane abilities. He is detailed in Rcane’s Guide to Fantastic Races: The Metallic Dragon Descended (available now).

Evetia – Dragon Goddess of Greed. She once ruled with Zyterus and created all dragons, but was corrupted by Wenin. She led her followers in a war against her mate which nearly destroyed the world. She is detailed in Rcane’s Guide to Fantastic Races: The Chromatic Dragon Descended (coming soon).

Forej – God of Nature, Wood, Elves and Fae. Forej is the oldest humanoid god. He ascended before the elves and fae separated, and has traits of both. He is detailed in Empires of Glory: The Gods of the First Pantheon (a free release from D3 Adventures).

Ridera – Goddess of Fire. Ridera was a human before her ascension. She was known for both her warm heart and her vicious temper, such as when she created the Sun Scorche Sea. She is detailed in Empires of Glory: The Gods of the First Pantheon (a free release from D3 Adventures).

Meliasuun – Goddess of Darkness. Originally, Meliasuun and her twin sister Daiasuun represented the balance between day and night. Meliasuun protected the other humans while they slept. Now, however, she has been corrupted by Wenin and serves a much darker purpose. She is detailed in Empires of Glory: The Gods of the First Pantheon (a free release from

D3 Adventures).

Daiasuun – Goddess of Light and Healing. Daiasuun began as a human healer. She would help the other humans through their many trials. She treated sickness, poison, and prepared the dead for their journey to the afterlife. When Wenin’s influence began to show as Meliasuun embraced evil, Daiasuun also took on the aspect of redemption, never giving up on saving her sister. She is detailed in Empires of Glory: The Gods of the First Pantheon (a free release from D3 Adventures).

Verenesh – Goddess of Knowledge and Magic, Keeper of the Planar Gates. Verenesh was raised among humans, but she has a touch of elemental blood in her ancestry. She outlived generations of her nearest kin and sought out Zelgadyn for instruction. With his guidance, she had taken magical ability to a far greater height, enabling planar travel. After seeing the potential for catastrophic events if left unchecked, she dedicated her life to defending the world from these threats. She was the last of the gods ascended by Pyren and Menea before the Godsfall. She is is detailed in Empires of Glory: The Gods of the First Pantheon (a free release from D3 Adventures).

Kyzol – God of Earth, Smithing, and Dwarves. Kyzol was a dwarf prior to his ascension. He discovered the ability to heat metal and forge it into tools and weapons. He built the first forge and created the armor and weapons the dwarves used against their enemies. A few of these items still exist today, though most have been lost to time. He is detailed in Empires of Glory: The Gods of the First Pantheon (a free release from D3 Adventures).

Lanat – Goddess of Air, Flight, Sky, and Birds. Lanat was an elf fascinated with the sky, whether that included perfect calm, gentle wind, or even fierce storms. She was also a devout priestess of Pyren. Her piety was rewarded and Pyren appeared to her, offering to grant any one wish. She requested wings like a bird. Pyren granted her wish, making her the first of a race of winged elves. Lanat soared through the air, always learning more about the world above where she was raised. She became a champion of the skies and fought those who would pollute or otherwise defile it with unrivaled passion. Pyren eventually raised her to godhood. She is detailed in Empires of Glory: The Gods of the First Pantheon (a free release from D3 Adventures).

Caraj – God of the Sea, Water. Caraj was one of the first fisherman, but he was always curious what rested beyond the horizon. Eventually, he took his own small ship beyond the coast and into the wild ocean. He drifted for years, stopping on the islands he passed and resupplying his ship with fresh water and fruit. After a decade, the currents returned him to his homeland. He told his village about the wonderful things he had seen and the great natural treasures beneath the waves. He is detailed in Empires of Glory: The Gods of the First Pantheon (a free release from D3 Adventures).

Author Musings: The Godsfall

The newest (fifth) in a series from Curtis Baum.

Eventually, Pyren and Menea discovered the corruption that Wenin had caused. Wenin was responsible for the fall of both Evetia and Meliasuun. His influence caused the formation of the goblinoids, dark elves, and other dark races. His desire, however, was not yet sated. He wanted the ability to create new life of his own, and he needed Menea to do that.

When Pyren came to confront Wenin, the dark god was ready. Wenin eased the fears of his brother, and waited until Pyren let down his guard. Wenin attacked his brother from behind, slaying him with his mighty scythe. Pyren, one of the oldest of the gods, was the first immortal murdered, and at the hands of his own brother.

Wenin then sought out Menea. He tried to convince her to help him create a new world, a dark world full of pain, torture, and torment. Menea, however, sensed what Wenin had done to Pyren. She confronted him about the death of his brother. Wenin did not deny his actions, but tried to use his own jealousy as an excuse for fratricide. He had wanted everything that Pyren and Menea had and he tried to blame them for his actions.

Menea was furious. She forced Wenin from her Well of Creation and banished him from all known realms, including his own Pit of Suffering. Then Menea sealed the Well of Creation from within. She has not answered the prayers of her followers nor has she manifested in the world of Antaran since.

Wenin found himself alone and unable to affect the world around him. Although he still had power, he was unable to enter either his own realm or the rest of creation. He can hear the prayers of his faithful, but cannot grant spells or manifest in Antaran either. Legends state that he roams the realms beyond those known, waiting for souls to torture and constantly seeking a way to return to his Pit.

The world was not untouched by the Godsfall. Dragons, for example, had an entire clutch of eggs hatch as humanoids rather than their own kind. These beings would become known as the dracnee, or children of the dragons. They would form centers of trade and industry that were apart from the human and goblinoid empires that controlled the continent of Menron.

In the end, the first gods were lost to the world. Pyren, the God of the Sun, was slain. Wenin, the God of Darkness, was exiled and unable to return. Menea, the Goddess of Creation, locked herself in her own realm and has not been seen or heard from since. The world was now in the hands of the Pantheon, without supervision of the Elder Gods.

Author Musings: The First Feuds

Empires of Glory 4 – The First Feuds

The fourth in a series from Curtis Baum.

Empires of Glory 4 – The First Feuds

Pyren and Menea soon found that they needed other gods to help them maintain their world. These gods were ascended from their mortal creations, and they had the flaws and personalities of their former lives. The new pantheon did not always agree and often their arguments were devastating. Some were even corrupted by Wenin and fell from their enlightened state.

The Sun Scorched Sea

The creation of the Sun Scorched Sea is the most dramatic change to the terrain of the world since Pyren and Menea first gathered the elements. In a single moment, the vast forests that ran through the center of the continent were destroyedAccording to legend, the cause of the event was a dispute between the young god Forej and the goddess Ridera.

Forej, the god of nature, the forest, and elves considered the massive forest through the middle of the continent of Menron to be his domain. Under his protection, the elves lived as a single unified race in their great forest cities. The area prospered and Forej grew proud of the creatures he was charged with protecting. However, he was also a great trickster and would tease the other gods incessantly. With the goddess Ridera and her short temper, he constantly provoked her.

Ridera was the recently ascended goddess of fire. Originally, she was a human who knew both the incredible benefits and terrifying devastation that flames could bring. She had spent most of her short life teaching others to respect the element rather than to fear it. However, she was known even in mortality for her short temper and burning rage.

Forej taunted Ridera about her lack of dedicated cities and devout followers. She had a church and worshippers, but he considered them inferior to his own noble elves and their vast cities. He even called her a fake and powerless god. After constant goading, Ridera rose up in fury and vowed to show Forej exactly what she was capable of. With a swipe of her hand, the proud elven forests were destroyed. The land was instantly raised hundreds of feet above the neighboring terrain. All vegetation, including the elven trees, died. The once proud forest was replaced by a harsh desert.

Most of the elves fled their homeland, separating into the different subspecies seen today. Those who stayed behind became the Sand Elves. Those who fled into the World Crown Mountains evolved into the Cloud Elves, the keepers of lore. The group who stayed in the forests to the east of the Sun Scorched Sea were the Forest Elves while their cousins that built cities along the borders of the human lands became the Vale Elves. Finally, some fled the land altogether, traveling down the river and to the sea, living as the Sea Elves.

The Dragon Civil War

The first advanced life created by Pyren and Menea were the dragons. The original two were the mated pair of Zyterus and Evetia and from them all dragons are descended. Their progeny spread throughout the world and found homes in a wide variety of terrains. These creatures were noble and honorable individuals who aided each other and the other races when needed, at least until Wenin got involved.

Wenin took the natural love of gold found in all dragons and amplified it in Evetia. He corrupted the matriarch of dragonkind, turning her into the goddess of greed. She quietly rallied as many of her children as she could to her cause, plotting in the dark.

When she was ready, she and her followers attacked Zyterus and the other dragons. Dragons across the entire world turned on their siblings, slaying their own kin and destroying entire clutches of eggs. Countless humanoid settlements were caught in the crossfire, leaving devastation across the globe.

Although a few dragons avoided choosing sides in the war, the vast majority were forced to side with one parent or the other. Although Evetia and her allies secured several early victories, they were unable to defeat Zyterus and his key advisers. Their retaliation was swift and brutal. It was not long before Evetia was forced to accept her defeat.

Zyterus refused to kill his own mate. Instead he forged a truce and established areas for his allies as well as her followers. Those who were able to avoid the war were also granted territory under the treaty. Although there have been rogue dragons that refuse to acknowledge the agreement, the violence between dragons has been greatly resolved. Evetia, however, is slowly biding her time while planning another attempt to conquer her mate and take his wealth and power for herself.

Author Musings: Empires of Glory – The First Races

Empires of Glory 3 – The First Races

The third in a series from Curtis Baum.

Working together, Pyren and Menea began to create the world. They took the essences of elements and merged them into a great ball that could sustain life. Pyren formed the sun from a piece of his Disc of Light and it shone brightly upon the world. Menea opened a portal to her Well of Life and plants and creatures both flowed freely into the new planet. Plants covered the land and filled the seas. Animals crawled across the land, forming nests and beginning to multiply. The oceans were filled with all manner of fish and life thrived.

Wenin watched as his siblings formed the world and brought forth fabulous creatures. He observed that the brilliance created by the sun was causing many of the plants to wither and some of the animals to suffer. He approached his brother and sister with a recommend and compromise. He knew they would not let him bring his own creations to life, but he showed them that too much light and warmth was causing their own creations to suffer and die. He suggested that he could bring an essence of his own domain to counter partially the effects of the sun, allowing respite from the heat and allowing more life to thrive. After seeing his evidence, his siblings agreed. Wenin created the night, a period of time that he controlled without his brother’s influence.

Pyren and Menea then began to change the life that inhabited their world. First, they took the elemental cores that forged their planet and implanted them into reptiles, creating the great dragons and their kin. Then, they took apes and refined them into massive beings of intellect and power, the giants. They then refined the process into the smaller and shorter lived humanoids (elves, humans, dwarves, halflings, and gnomes.)

Pyren and Menea soon found that they had more creations than they could reasonably manage. They sought the greatest samples of their various creations and imbued them with wonderful powers. The pantheon began to form from all races and the authority over creation was divided amongst them. The elder gods had created helpers and gave them divinity.

What they failed to see was how Wenin was able to slowly corrupt all of their creations. He turned the hearts of some of the giants and dragons into cold greedy creatures. He tortured some of the elves, turning them into dark elves and orcs. Nothing his siblings had created was immune to the lure of darkness that Wenin provided. His influence even took a toll on the pantheon of gods themselves.

A clash between the powers of light and dark was brewing and the results would be devastating to the world.

Tickling Your Thoughts – Story development Superhero style

Super Powered by M&M Campaign Setting Quantum Collapse

The Diamond District was in a shambles Monday night, after Protection League member Electrode used his powers to thwart a heist. A group of masked thugs armed with military grade weapons charged into one of the street level diamond dealers on north side of 47th street. None of the three employees inside the small shop were seriously injured in the attack, though all were bound with duct tape and the same type of heavy-duty zip ties issued to the New York City Corrections Department. The robbers moved through the store, pulling safes and display cases out with their bare hands, and tossing them into a large rental truck out front. Before the NYPD could arrive on the scene, Electrode, the well-known masked vigilante appeared and began wrecking havoc in the street. After a brief battle between the super strong robbers and the electrically charged crime-fighter the street covered in broken glass, smashed truck parts, and the glint of loose diamonds. After the fight, Electrode left the battered and smoldering criminals to be dealt with by the police while he held an impromptu press conference on the street. Neither this reporter nor any of the others from major news sources was able to get a question answered by the so-called hero, however lifestyle and celebrity gossip reporters were able to pose several questions. For further details, see Jose Valdez’s report in the Celebrity Hero Watch section in the City Living section of this paper.

Tickling Your Thoughts – Snow

Steadily moving forward not breaking her pace. An even stride even against such weather. Of all the things we thought would destroy us, not one was another ice age. Pulling at her clothes the icy wind cut through even the most dense fabrics. Looking up and bracing her eyes against the refracted sun in the blistering snow. Shelter, she would need shelter soon. Looking back into the bleak white endlessness. Broken only by her weary steps. She pushes on looking ever forward hoping to find one of the lost buried frozen cities. Shelter first, then food. She frowns, companionship, yes that would be nice. She shivers in the creeping dusk and steps forward one more time. If not for the promise of shelter on the horizon she would fade like so many before her…. ◊Tony Ting

A quiet week in a cabin in the woods, an hour from the nearest people, no phone or Internet or tv, sounded like a great idea to jump-start my new book. I woke up today to fresh fallen snow….and footprints leading to my front door. But there’s no one else here…. Hel McGee

Tickling your thoughts – Grand Hall

Tickling your thoughts

New weekly (or semi-weekly) post just about Short Story Ideas.  This week I asked one of my friends to make a story about this grand hall.

Through the halls the silence falls.

Everyone is home with family and friends.

Later there will be rules to make, laws to pass, society waits it’s next gaffaw.

Tonight is for celebration our thoughts of the ethereal.

Gifts for all abound.

Taking center podium, our gods await.

Happy holidays to all.

◊Sindy Curry

The hall of the ancients. It is here that hundreds before me became knights templar. Rigorous studies and even more intense physical training. Only now am i allowed within this sacred hall. Though i am but thirteen i am beside myself as a man. I look upon the gilded tapestries. Each a hundred plus years older than i. The two cloistered beside me anoint me with sacred scented waters and oils as i aproach the altar. Soon my training will be complete. My final test before me. As i stand upon the pedestal. Look out among my peers as a hooded knight draws his sword. The final question to my training spills from his lips as a mountain of doom. “What is the name of this place?”. My mind swirls and pours over the ancient knowledge i have studied. This place is a mystery even to the oldest of knights. He raises his sword as i look about. A wild despareging gaze as i founder in my lack of knowledge. Surely a wrong answer means death. a non answer proves ignorance and neglect in my studies. Also ultimately my death. What could it be? ◊Tony Ting
